John married Helen Geddis before early 1763 based on the birth date of their first child, Thomas ^{[citation needed]}.

Research Notes

• A search of ScotlandsPeople.com's old parish registers for births and baptism using Tel* for the surname and the wild card allowed option, for the date range 1736 to 1748 with county set to Dumfries, gives three possible canditates. The only one born in Canonbie was baptised 1748, which would make him 16 at the birth of his first child. A more likely candidate was a John Telford, baptised 14 March 1739 in Eskdalemuir, son of George Telford and Margaret Young^[8]. This John Telford^[8] and the Helen Geddies born 1740 in Eskdalemuir^[9] would likely have grown up knowing each other (and were possibly cousins, as their mothers had the same surname). I have not changed either this profile or Helen's to reflect this speculation, since there is no available record for the marriage, nor is there any record to explain the move to Canonbie.
