  • TAYLOR GENEALOGICAL HISTORY; By John Taylor

[Orval A. Taylor’s 3rd cousin, (handwritten note on copy owned by Orval A. Taylor)]

  • Five Taylor brothers—George, James, William, John and Caufield came to America from County Armagh, Ireland, in 1760, and settled in Rockbridge County, Virginia.
  • The Ancestors of most of the settlers in this early pioneer section of Virginia had previously left England and Scotland for Northern Ireland to escape the heavy taxes, religious persecution and political oppression then existing in those countries. Taylor being an English name, it is presumed that the five Taylor brothers or their ancestors originally migrated from England.
  • The resources of the Taylor brothers enabled them to acquire slaves and fertile lands in the virgin valley of Cedar Creek, a scenic stream about six miles in length, flowing into the James River after passing beneath on of the “World’s Wonders”, the natural Bridge of Virginia.
  • John Taylor was killed in the American Revolution on April 25, 1778, and his brother Caufield was taken prisoner, but liberated after the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. James was ensign in Company Four of the Virginia Militia as it stood April 30, 1777, and William was 1st Lieutenant, Company Eight of Rockbridge Virginia Militia (And, Act. XV-401) as it stood April 1, 1777.
