Biography

Major General Henry Taylor was born in 1738 to Matthew Taylor (1707-1784) and Mary Beyerington (1715-1784) in Wales. Henry was one of eight children born to this union. Here are his siblings:

Sometime during 1770, he settled and built his cabin in the Rich Hills, on the banks of Chartier's Creek, about one mile from the present town of Washington, Pennsylvania. The cabin was completed by Christmas of 1770.

In 1772, Henry married Jane Jean White (1747-1835) in Washington, Pennsylvania. They would also have eight children.

In 1781, he served as a judge for Washington County, Pennsylvania.

Henry served in the Revolutionary War. There is an excerpt from the DAR stating the following: "Henry Taylor (1738-1801) was recommended for major of the county militia at a meeting of the Court of Yohogania County, Pennsylvania, 1776." He resigned from this position on December 24, 1777. Henry served in Captain George Sharp's Company, 3rd Battalion, Washington County Militia.

"In the name of God Amen. I Henry Taylor of the County of Washington the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania being very sick and weak of body but of perfect mind and memory and calling to mind the mortality of my body do make and ordain this my last will and testament and testament. In manner and form following that is to say in the first place I will and ordain that all my just debts and funeral charges be paid and satisfied out of my personal Estate by my Executors herein after named---Imprimis I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Jean her mare and Saddle the Cow she brought from her father the bed and bedding brought as above the use of chief mansion house and improved lands on the plantation; her maintenance; one-third part of personal estate after debts and expenses)

Land devised to testator by his father Mathew TAYLOR situate in Cecil County, Maryland be sold by executors to be disposed of as follows: the several legacies willed by testator’s father to three sisters: Jean STEER, Mary CAMPBELL, and Ester GILLASPIE or their children, residue to clearing patents in Washington County, remainder for schooling of children; paying part of Daughter Ann’s legacy Son Mathew (tract of land with appurtenances adjoining testator’s tract, late of Richard YATES warranted in the name of John TAYLOR subject to payment of 50 pounds to daughter Ann as part of her portion of 150 pounds, to be paid at the end of 21 years to be computed from the date of her birth.
