Robert Taylor was a Virginia colonist.

Robert Taylor, son of Thomas Taylor and Margaret Swinderly, was born 7 November 1601 possibly in Hadleigh, Suffolk, England. He died in 1689 in Essex County, Virginia.[1]

Robert married Patience Margaret Palmer on 1 June 1627 in England.[1]

Birthplace

The Wittel family history gives Robert's birthplace as Pennington Castle, Carlisle, Cumberland, England. As noted on the profile of his father, Thomas Taylor, this is not possible. Pennington Castle was located in the historic County of Lancashire. There are no literary references to the castle itself after 1322 and it was probably in a state of delapidation at the time of Robert's birth. It is more likely he was born where his father is said to have lived and died, Hadleigh, Suffolk, although this itself is uncertain.

Emigration to Virginia

It is said by some that three of the children of Thomas Taylor emigrated to Virginia on the Truelove in 1635. The Truelove made two trips to the colonies, one in September 1635 to Massachusetts, and one in June 1635 to Bermuda. The passenger list of the Bermuda voyage includes James, Richard, WIlliam and Ann Taylor, obviously members of the same family. But neither of the two trips of the Truelove include a Robert Taylor.

A Robert Taylor was aboard the Paule of London to Virginia in July 1635, but he was age 18 (born 1617), too young to be this Robert.[2]

There are several references to a Robert Taylor in Virginia from 1637 to 1664, either recording a land patent or being transported to the colony by someone else.[3] [4] More research will be needed to see which, if any, of these references belong to this Robert Taylor.
