Biography

James Taylor was born in Drumleck, Armagh, Ireland on 1739 to John Taylor and Nancy Barens. In 1760, James and his 4 brothers, George, William, John, and Caufield, came to Rockbridge County, Virginia. His brother John was killed in battle on 25 Apr 1778. Caufield was taken prisoner but released after the surrender of Cornwallis. William is said to have married Janet Paul, the sister of John Paul Jones (John was a Paul and added the surname of his foster father). The brothers settled in the valley at the head of Cedar.

James married Ann Paul, the daughter of Capt. Audley Paul. (His brother, Caufield, married Rebecca, also a daughter of Capt. Paul). James and Ann had 14 children. Among those children (not necessarily in birth order) are:

  • Rebecca
  • Hugh, a bachelor, was an attorney and surveyor. He wrote Hugh Paul Taylor's Sketches, a historical work covering the years 1740-1781; buried at Rockbridge Baths.
  • Nancy
  • Phoebe
  • Stuart, a tanner and currier by trade, lived on the brow of Hogback Mountain; m. Martha E. Hickman in 1819;
