Biography

William was born 23 Jan 1753 in Orange County, Virginia. He was commissioned first lieutenant on 29 Jan 1776 then captain on 28 Dec 1776 in the 2nd Virginia Regiment in 1776; and commissioned major on 07 Dec 1779 in the 9th Virginia Regiment. He was released from service on 12 Feb 1781 and removed in 1786 to Kentucky, where he had received a 5,333 acre land grant for his service in the Revolution. He resided in Louisville, ^[1] married first on 06 Jun 1786 in Jefferson County, Kentucky to Lucy Hord, ^[2] married second on 22 Jul 1796 at Jefferson County, Kentucky to Elizabeth Coats, ^[3] and had seven children. He passed away in Kentucky on 14 Apr 1830. ^[1]

William's brother Francis's diary says that William owned slaves who were quartered at Albemarle Barracks, which is where British and Hessian prisoners of war were kept after their surrender in the Revolution. The diary does not name them or indicate how many were there.
