Olof was born to a single mother and grew up with her and his stepfather in Norrtanflo, Resele parish. He had one older sister and 10 younger siblings. In May 1904, at age 17, Olof left home and emigrated to North America. His WWI draft card states that he was living in Bingham, Utah, and working as a miner, and that he was of medium height, with blue eyes and brown hair. His WWII draft card states that he lived in Eureka, Nevada, and was self employed.
Research Notes
His birth was recorded in Ådals-Liden parish where his mother was living (in Näsåker) at the time, but later records say that he was born in Resele parish, where they moved when Olof was 2 months old. His father is not named in the birth record. Possibly, the name Söderlund came from him.
