Biography

Alfred Symes was born in early 1841 at Martock in Somerset ^{[1] [2] [3]} He was the son of Walter Symes and Ann Buckrell. ^[4]

In 1851 Alfred was living at Coat in Martock with his mother Ann, his brothers, and his grandmother Jane Buckrell. His age was given as 10, implying a birth date in 1840 or 1841. His birthplace was given as Coat, Somerset. He was at school ^[3].

Alfred Symes, aged 22, a farmer, of Haselbury Plucknett, son of Walter Symes, horse dealer; and Jane Dix, aged 19, of Haselbury Plucknett, daughter of William Dix, yeoman; were married on 7 April 1863 at the parish church of Haselbury Plucknett in Somerset ^[5].

In 1871 Alfred Symes was living at North Street in Haselbury Plucknett with his wife Jane, their children, and his mother-in-law Jane Dix. His age was given as 30, implying a birth date in 1840 or 1841. His birthplace was given as Martock, Somerset. He was a farmer, of 96 acres, employing 3 men and 2 boys. ^[6]

Alfred Symes died at Haselbury Plucknett on 20 May 1913, after a long illness, leaving a widow and seven sons. ^{[7] [8]}

When he died he was one of the oldest tenants on the Portman Estate. He had filled every parochial office, and had served for 9 years on the Yeovil Board of Guardians. ^[8]
