Biography

John Benton Southerland, son of J.P. and Martha Southerland, was born May 2, 1874, and died at the Berryville Hospital February 7, 1955 at the age of eighty-one years. He was a native of Madison County and lived in Eureka Springs seven years, and the remainder of his life in the Rock House community.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Pearl Southerland, and the following daughters: Mrs. Vera M. Roberts and Mrs. Winnie O. Williams of Chatsworth, California; Mrs. Vicie V. Pinkley and Mrs. Leola F. Billings of Eureka Springs; and Mrs. Vellah M. McCall of Fort Garland, Colorado, and sons: Essie K. Southerland, of Manzanola, Colorodo and Dow L. Southerland Johnnie T. Southerland of California, and Hall C. Southerland; Eureka Springs.

He is also survived by three brothers; Charlie Southerland, of Dallas, Texas; Jesse Southerland, of Kansas City, Mo., and Tim Southerland of Blue Jay, Oklahoma. In addition thirty-two grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren survive.

Two daughters, Beulah and Mattie Southerland, preceded him in death.

He was a faithful member of the Assembly of God Church, having united with this affiliation on October 10, 1948 and being baptized by Rev. Den Montgomery of Springdale.
