Biography

David Sutherland is a member of Clan Sutherland.

David Sutherland was born around 1750/1755 in Caithness.

Originary from Caithness, David Sutherland moved to the south of Scotland around the end of 1770's where he acquired farmland as a tacksman.

"David Sutherland in Abbay of St Bathans married Mary Angus from Cockburnspath (a grand-daughter of John Angus of Styford, Northumberland) at Cockburnspath Church, Berwickshire, Scotland on 11 December 1778."

On the baptismal certificate of his daughter, Mary, born in 1781, David is listed as Farmer of Thorntonloch and living on the farm (he held a tack of the Thornton land from John Hoy of Thornton where he growed wheat.

Around 1790, David left Thorntonloch to Leith, in Midlothian, where he will have a farm and a tanning business, selling tanned animal skins.

His first wife, Mary Angus, died at the age of 40 in 1794 and is buried in Leith South churchyard.

From his first marriage to Mary Angus he had three children :

- Mary Sutherland (b. 1781 at Thorntonloch) who married Daniel Kerse, owner of an iron foundry in Leith South and had children all died at a young age expect one.

- Francis Sutherland in Thurston (b. 1784 at Thorntonloch) who became tacksman and Bailiff of Thurston, managing the day-to-day running of the farms and the estate's finances. He obtained Thurston Home Farm, where the family lived until the 1880s.

- David Sutherland (b. 1786 in Thorntonloch) who acquired the farm of Western Kenleith in Currie Midlothian.

In 1797 he remarried Mary Turnbull and had 6 children all died young or without known issue.

(David Sutherland in Abbay of St Bathans is the progenitor of the Sutherland family of Thurston of which I am a direct descendant (His eldest son, Francis Sutherland, acquired the farmland of the Thurston Estate in Innerwick, Haddingtonshire).

(On the death certificate of his wife Mary Angus it says "Mary Angus Sutherland wife of David Sutherland Farmer in Leith aged 40 years died 14th buried and was buried 15 April 1794 in the Wrights ground in Leith).
