Biography

Rosa Estelle Sutherland was born July 14, 1878 in Pawnee, Nebraska, United States to parents Isac Sutherland and Lily Perdue .^[1]

Rosa married John Andrew Johnson on October 10, 1896 in Montezuma, Poweshiek County, Iowa.^[2] Together they had at least three children:

1. Viola Estelle (1896 - 1983)^[3]
2. Victoria Bertha (1899 - 1969)
3. Henry Isaac (1904 - 1982) ^[4]

John Andrew died in 1927 but there are records for the marriage of Rose Sutherland and Hugh Ira Thomas for August 13, 1917 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa.^[5] One son was born to this union; Willard Denzel / Denzal (1912 - 1998).

• IT is also STRANGE that there is a delayed birth record and two Censuses, 1920, 1930 on which this trio appeared but why was Willard born five years before the marriage? Did Rose and John Andrew get divorced? Was it because of a pregnancy br Hugh Ira Thomas? These are my 4th great-grandparents and I don't want to "sully" anyone's names but researching this data is only giving me more questions.

She passed away in Polk, Iowa on September 13, 1964. ^[6]

FindaGrave shows a memorial for Rose Estelle Sutherland Thomas at Pine Hill Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa ^[7] but the body of the biography simply states:
