His date of birth is uncertain but it is likely to be about 1755. It is likely that his father was also named William.

William Sutherland ( c 1755) married Merran ( Mary Ann or Marion) Sutherland daughter of John Sutherland and Margaret Bannerman on the 5th January 1789 in Golspie, Sutherlandshire, Scotland . The OPR record states, " Both of this Parish' t is relevant to know that Merran also had a sister Margaret who also married a William Sutherland. It is believed that both sisters lived to be 100 years old.

William's occupation is given as a shepherd at Gordonbush ( on daughter Margaret's 1861 death record), a crofter ( on daughter Janet's 1884 death registration), a wheelwright ( according to daughter Christina's 1893 death record) and a carpenter at Backies in Gordonbush.

10 known children were born to William and Merran. Janet ( bapt 5 Dec 1789), Alexander ( 30 July 1792), Elizabeth, Margaret ( bapt 1793/5) , William ( 5 April 1795), John Angus ( c 1802) Christy ( unknown) , George ( 13 July 1800) Christian ( 22/04/1803) and Betsy ( 11 Jan 1807)

William died in 1823.
