John Sutherland is a member of Clan Sutherland.

John Sutherland was born in 1782 at Latheron, Caithness the son of Alexander Sutherland and Christina Bain.

He married Jean Harriet Gordon Sutherland (1787 - 1874) on 10 February 1810 in Latheron, Caithness.^[1]

1841 Census in Scotland - Lybster, Latheron, Caithness. John Sutherland age 55 (general merchant) resided with his wife Jean age 50. Other household members at the address were Barbara Sutherland (30), Alex Sutherland (25), Donald Sutherland (20), Patrick (12), John Sutherland (10), Jane Sutherland (8) and William Sutherland (6).^[2]

1851 Scotland Census - Hillhead, Latheron. John age 68 (merchant) resided with his wife Jane age 63, son Patrick age 21 (clerk), grandson William age 14 (scholar), niece Janet McGregor age 41 and Alexander Gunn age 46 a travelling hawker.^[3]

A probable 1861 Scotland Census - Hillhead, Latheron. John age 78. (merchant) born in Swiney resided with his wife Jane age 68 also born in Swiney. Other household members are servants Williamina McDonald age 18 and James McDonald age 16, both born in Clyth.^[4]

John died on 10th October 1862 at Hillhead, Lybster in Latheron. He was buried in the Old Cemetery in Latheron, Caithness.^[5]
