Note: c. 1856 from age at death, conflicts with derived birth date from 1901 cens. but matches with age in 1861 census. Given Catherine born 1856, assumed to be 1855, except not obvious on igi, which has indexed all Scottish BDMs from 1855, so possibly 1854?[2][3][4]

Note: Poss. the Jessie SUTHERLAND, 24, unm, general serv, b Latheron, in household of David, solicitor, 29 b Olrig, & Elisabeth MURRAY, b Edin, living 4 Rillbank Tce, Edinburgh St Cuthberts.
I considered the following further:
Jessie cook, 23, with Janet THOMSON in Edinburgh St Georges with Janet THOMSON school mistress
Also the Jessie with Benjamin McKENZIE, Edinburgh St Cuthberts, given the McKENZIE connection with her brother John.
But for that one to fit she had to have married Donald SUTHERLAND and had Margaret E around Dec 1880. Not impossible, but looking rather unlikely. Age fits, birth place fits assuming Letheron is Latheron.
Highlands possibles:
21, boarder, schoolmistress with John & Janet MacKAY at House in Rangag. Rangag is where mother Elizabeth was born. That however had a birthplace of Wick, but also a William SUTHERLAND, servant herding cattle, aged 13, b Latheron. I suspect this one went on to be the schoolmistress at Thurso 1892, by which time Jessie was married and in Edinburgh.
Another Rangag connection that looked interesting was Jessie servant, 18, b Latheron in the house of Andrew & Barbara SINCLAIR.
With the additional circumstantial connection of a son James Mill SINCLAIR, which caught my eye given that Jessie's sister Elizabeth mar. James BROWN (in Victoria) and one of their children was Janet Mill BROWN. I think James's parents were James BROWN and Janet MILL, but I also think he was born in Kilrenny, FIF.[26]
