Biography

Eliza (Sutherland) Malcolm is a member of Clan Sutherland.

Grace Elizabeth, known as Eliza or Elizabeth migrated with her husband James Malcolm, formerley Malcolmson and their two remaining children James and Finlay on the clipper ship 'Wild Deer'. The voyage took 84 days, passing around the Cape of Good Hope, south of Tasmania and Stewart Island, and arriving at Port Chalmers on the 9th March 1874. The parents of Grace Elizabeth, - George Sutherland (boat carpenter aged 62 ) of Lerwick, Shetland Islands , and Margaret Jane Sutherland, nee Smith , and her brothers Charles and Robert also migrated on the same ship. Conditions in the Shetland Islands were dire, and there was a big recruitment by the New Zealand Government to bring families to New Zealand. ^[1]
