Biography

Clara was born about 1867. She passed away in North Adelaide, South Australia, during 1925.

Clara married George Herbert Jose in Toorak, Victoria, Australia on 19 June 1890.^[1][2] The following marriage notice was published in the Victorian newspaper, The Argus, on 9 July 1890:^[2]

JOSE-STURT. —On the 19th ult., at the Scotch Church, Toorak, by the Rev. W. S. Rolland, assisted by the Rev. J. W. Gibson, George Herbert, second son of W. W. Jose, Esq., Porteshead, Somerset, England, to Clara Ellen, only daughter of T. J. Sturt, Esq , M.D., late of Bulli, N.S.W.

Clara died in North Adelaide, South Australia on 22 June 1925 at the age of 58 years. ^[3] The following death notice was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Advertiser, on 23 June 1925:^[4]

JOSE. — On the 22nd June, at Christ Church Rectory, North Adelaide, Clara Ellen, dearly loved wife of Canon G. H. Jose.

Clara was buried at the North Road Cemetery in Nailsworth, South Australia on 24 June 1925 after a memorial service held at Christ Church in North Adelaide, South Australia.^[5][6]

The following obituary was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Register, on 23 June 1925:^[7]

The very many friends of Mrs. Jose, wife of Canon G. H. Jose, rector of Christ Church, North Adelaide, will receive with regret the news of her death yesterday. She was born in Cavendish square, London, her father being Dr. T. J. Sturt, M.D., F.R.C.S. She came to Victoria, with her parents in 1871, and was married in June 1890. She went with her husband to China, where they were missionaries from 1891 to 1898. They returned to Australia in 1903. Mrs. Jose had been associated with the Canon at Christ Church rectory since 1907. There were three sons of the marriage, one of whom, Lieut. W. O. Jose, was killed in action in 1917. The other two are Dr. I. B. Jose, of Adelaide, and Dr. G. E. Jose, of Woodside. Mrs. Jose had always been closely associated with church work, and will be greatly missed in the parish. There will be a service in Christ Church on Wednesday.
