In 1841 Census, he is down as a victualler.

I have hit a brickwall with my STURT ancestry in the Abinger/Shere area. John STURT my 4xgt grandfather was married twice in Shere (but I cannot find any trace of his baptism or birth).

1) Elizabeth HOOKER in 1774 and had nine children. The eldest 5 being baptised in Shere - William 1774, James 1776, John 1777, Henry 1778, Elizabeth 1780. The remaining 4 were baptised in Abinger - Mary 1781, Edward 1783 (3x gt-grandfather), Nathaniel 1785, Thomas 1787.

2) Ann Baxter (widow) from Chobham in 1793.

John STURT moved to Chobham after his 2nd marriage (confirmed in the Land Tax records) and died in 1812 aged 56. (Making his birth c1746. )Ann had already died and was some 20 yrs his senior.

In the 1851 census several of the children said their birthplace was Cranley (Cranleigh), although baptised in Shere and Abinger.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions as to where I might look next for the baptism or other information of John (born c1746)? There seem to be no STURTs at this time in these parish records although there is a John STURT witnessing several weddings in Abinger in 1755/56.

Secondly, William, John, Henry and Thomas appear to have remained in Abinger. Is anyone researching these or have any information regarding them? The other 5 all moved to Chobham from whence the Chobham/Windlesham STURTs grew apace.
