Miriam Stringer or Longshaw was born in about 1847 at Milton under Wychwood in Oxfordshire. She was the daughter of Rhoda Stringer, who was an unmarried woman. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
Her mother married Robert Longshaw in 1848, and in subsequent censuses Miriam is treated/named as his daughter. Her older brother Reuben was treated in the same way. When her son Robert William Longshaw's birth was registered, her maiden name was given as "Longshaw".
In 1851 Miriam Longshaw was living at Shipton under Wychwood in Oxfordshire with her parents, Robert and Rhoda, and their other children. Her age was given as 4, implying a birth date in 1846 or 1847. Her birthplace was given as Milton, Oxfordshire. [2]
In 1861 Miriam was living at Fulbrook in Oxfordshire with her parents and their other children. Her age was given as 14, implying a birth date in 1846 or 1847. Her birthplace was given as Milton, Oxfordshire. [3]
John Phelps, bachelor, aged 30, a labourer, of Shipton, son of William Phelps, farmer; and Miriam Stringer, spinster, aged 22, of Shipton, [no father's name]; were married at the parish church of Shipton under Wychwood on 5 November 1870. [4]
In 1871 Miriam Phelps was living at Upton St Leonard in Gloucestershire with her husband John, as lodgers. Her age was given as 23, implying a birth date in 1847 or 1848. Her birthplace was given as Milton, Oxfordshire. She was a char woman. [6]
Her husband died in July 1871.
William Longshaw, bachelor, aged 19, a labourer, of Langley, son of John Longshaw, labourer; and Miriam Phelps, widow, aged 23, of Shipton, [no father's name]; were married at Shipton under Wychwood parish church on 16 September 1872. The witnesses were called Robert Longshaw and Harriet Longshaw. [5]
Their son Robert William Longshaw was born in 1873.
The family emigrated to New Zealand on the Michael Angelo. Miriam Longshaw was said on the passenger list to be aged 26. [7] Their son died at sea. They arrived at Nelson in January 1875.
She passed away in 1925.
