Biography

John Stone (or atte Stone) was born about 1420, probably at Ardleigh, Essex, the son of Walter atte Stone.[1] The name of his mother is not known.

The name of John Stone's wife is unknown. They were married about 1445, based on the estimated birth of their eldest child.[1]

John Stone was the first member of the Stone family to occupy a small estate in Ardleigh that was called "Barons" for over four centuries. He likely secured the copyhold on the land in 1468/9. The estate was located in the southeast part of Ardleigh near the Great Bromley boundary line. The property was later called "Old Shields" in the 1800s.[1]

In 1473 (Trinity term, 13 Edward IV) John Deryfall, yeoman, of Ardeley, was summonsed to answer John Stone of same, yeoman, for a debt for unpaid rent. They had made an agreement on 25 February 1471/2 for Deryfall to pay an annual rent of 12s 6d for use of a part of Barons; Deryfall had used the land but did not pay the rent.[2]

John Stone died in 1487. At a court of the Manor of Bovills held on 11 December 1487, "Walter Stone appeared at the court and made fealty to the lord for two crofts and a garden adjacent called Barons, held by copy of court roll which late was held by [blank] his father".[1]

Children

John and his wife had the following children:[1]

  1. Walter, eldest son, born about 1445, probably died before 1500, without male issue. At his father's death, Walter succeeded to the land called "Barons" in Ardleigh
  2. Simon, born about 1450, ancestor of the Stones of America
  3. John, born about 1455
  4. George, born about 1460
