John Stone (or atte Stone) was born about 1420, probably at Ardleigh, Essex, the son of Walter atte Stone.[1] The name of his mother is not known.
The name of John Stone's wife is unknown. They were married about 1445, based on the estimated birth of their eldest child.[1]
John Stone was the first member of the Stone family to occupy a small estate in Ardleigh that was called "Barons" for over four centuries. He likely secured the copyhold on the land in 1468/9. John Stone died in 1487. At a court of the Manor of Bovills held on 11 December 1487, "Walter Stone appeared at the court and made fealty to the lord for two crofts and a garden adjacent called Barons, held by copy of court roll which late was held by [blank] his father".[1]
