Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
William Stone was a Virginia colonist.

William was born about 1645. Another William Stone was born about that same year, his wife was Mary and they had at least one child christened in St Peter's Parish, New Kent, Virginia.

It should be noted that other researchers have found additional men named William Stone, some in the region. Presently, on FamilySearch, one contributor unequivocally states: Only proven children are William, Ashwell, Elizabeth & Mary per Historical Southern Families, Volume VI. However, as the research has been compiled, as will become apparent, the will of the present William Stone, and that of his wife, Sarah, tell a different story. Thus, a word of caution that descendants in particular can be helpful in determining whether the correct line has been identified, but also note that with common names such as William and Sarah, even that is not enough to make a definitive statement without corroborating evidence (such as known and sourced/proven children and location).

Our William Stone married Sarah.[1][2]

Among their children were:

  1. Sarah (Stone) Glasscock (William's grandson John Glasscock was named in his will).[1] About 1698, Sarah had married Thomas Glasscock (born circa 1671)[3]
  2. Phillip Stone[1]
  3. Joshua Stone[1]
  4. Elizabeth (Stone) Dawson[1][2]
  5. Mary (Stone) Fann[1]
  6. William Stone[2]
  • Son in law Robert Schofield (the wife of Robert is not apparent from the will abstract)[1]

He died in 1707, with a Farnham Parish, Richmond County, Virginia will date of 31 Jan 1797, which named his wife, Sarah, and the above-noted children.[1]

William Stone-12167 and William Stone-1182 are obvious duplicates, but they have different parents that need to be resolved before their profiles can be merged.
posted by Kay (Johnson) Wilson
If this William is from a different family, then he needs sources that distinguish him from being a husband of Sarah (Unknown), to whom he is attached.

Right now, they are clear duplicates, but for the parents. [Just noticed that I incorrectly associated Mary (Stone) Fann as the wife of Robert Schofield. Will fix that next.]

No sources are cited on this William Stone's profile that name or associate him with the attached parents; also of note: the same is true for the other William Stone who is also married to the same Sarah (Unknown) and has the matching profile narrative.

Unless anyone can come up with proof of parents, the most judicious action would be to detach both of these William Stones from their parents, unless, as I said before, this present William Stone can be distinguished from the William Stone who married Sarah (Unknown); OR, unless we can find some proof of his origins.

After review of the present William Stone's parents, a few notes:

  1. Ackelys Geneology is cited, but it is not a complete citation that can be reproduced. It appears to name two potential mothers for William Stone.
  2. The mother's profile is basically incomplete with no citations - as she is described, she could be a conflation between the two named wives of George Stone in Ackelys Geneology.
  3. The parents of the profile of William Stone to be merged have been recommended to be detached, as they do not name a son William Stone, and also lack any sources that would link the William Stone who married Sarah to either of them.
  4. The parents of the present William Stone are the same as those shown on FamilySearch (still looking for an actual source that proves them, however).

Thank you for your time. I hope that we can get some resolution on this soon.

I corrected Mary (Stone) Fann. Wish that we knew which daughter had married Schofield. Probably was a first marriage...

Hi, Lorene! My note was not directed specifically to you, but to others that might attempt inappropriate merges. The real Stone expert is Cheryl Stone Caudill. I was adding the message on her behalf. I am happy to make your acquaintance, as we are all, somehow, related. Regards.
