Hi Pip

I have some questions about putting up living relatives on WT while aIl the privacy settings exist, most people in our family are very reluctant to do so. Is there a non web based family tree program that I can use for these living relatives that we could share around and maintain that could be uploaded into WikiTree in the future ? Some have asked me if Family Search and Ancestry harvest info from WT . I may have missed it but I couldn’t find answers to these questions yesterday. Thanks in anticipation. Liz

Liz, all living people (and this could include people who do not have death dates and could possibly be alive) will automatically be listed as private. You would be the only person able to see their information (unless you add someone as a co-manager of the profiles or include someone on their trusted list). It does not matter which program one uses (I use Family Tree Maker), WikiTree rules for living people are in line with EU privacy rules. We can’t even discuss them in our forum.

Hope this helps,

Pip

Thanks that’s what I thought but they still are reluctant as they think any info about them could be hacked.

However you didn’t answer re Ancestry, FamilySearch, Find my past etc harvesting my info from WIki Tree. Thank you.

Liz, I don’t know if other sites harvest information from WikiTree (I don’t think they can), but I do know that *individuals* can if the profiles are too far back to protect with privacy. For a while I used WikiTree for my own personal database, but never posted my stuff in another site.

This is an Internet-wide problem in more than just genealogy. There is plagiarism all over the Web. This is true even for photos people post in one genealogy site. It’s a problem.

If you want a more definitive answer, you can contact info @ wikitree . com. The folks there will know.

Kind regards,

Pip
