He passed away in 1893 and is buried at Gouldtown Memorial Park in Gouldtown, New Jersey.
According to the book Voice of Dissent--Theophilus Gould Steward (1843-1924) and Black America by William Seraile, 1991, James died on June 5th, 1893. However, according to the family Bible, he died on June 6th, and according to New Jersey, Deaths and Burials Index, 1798-1971 he died June 4, 1892.
Research Notes
His cousin was Theodore Gould[1] which makes me wonder about James' connection to Gouldtown and if there's any relation. More research needed.
