Biography

Elizabeth was the first child born to the marriage of Jane Campbell and the Rev. William Stevenson.

Documents filed in 1830 with the Hempstead AR court system provide some clarity about her first marriage. Her first husband was John Johnson, who her father William Stevenson mentions in a letter to his friend William Woods of Bellevue, MO.

John's probate papers were filed in 1830 in Hempstead AR where it was generally believed he had died. However, in a document filed by Edward Johnson Sen 2 Jun 1830, Edward reports that the family had moved to Augusta KY in an effort to improve John's health, and that he died while in Augusta.

This Edward might have been his father (also called "Ned") or his brother, both of whom are believed to have been alive in 1830.

Elizabeth, or "Betsey," can be found in the 1830 Bracken, KY, census. It is likely that her brother James Porter Stevenson, who studied for the ministry at Augusta College, was living with her and the children at that time. Martin Ruter DD, a close neighbor, was president of the college. (See sources below for more info on Ruter)

At some point during or after the settling of John Johnson's probate, Betsey and the children returned to Hempstead AR. She remarried 14 Apr 1832 to John Hopkins Fowler, but died soon thereafter 22 Nov 1835. They are not known to have had any children together.

I see you've identified this "Elizabeth Stevenson" with the "Mrs. Elizabeth Alexander" who was the 2nd wife of John Hopkins Fowler -- but you say her 1st husband was John Johnson. Did you note my comment on Fowler's page before you made that link? How do you reconcile the mismatched names?

Michael, I did not see anything in the comments section on the excellent profile you manage for John Hopkins Fowler, but I may have missed it.

In brief, the Elizabeth Stevenson I linked to John's profile would have been his second wife, the one he married before his marriage to Mrs. Elizabeth Alexander (Elizabeth Johnson). While I have not yet located an official record of this marriage, it is likely that it took place some time after her previous husband John Johnson's probate was settled in Hempstead County, but before her father William mentions the marriage in the 1832 letter referenced below.

This Elizabeth's death 22 Nov 1835 is recorded in Stevenson family Bible records. I have found no formal record of her death or burial, and family records seem to be in disagreement about where she died, one mentioning Arkansas and another Claiborne Parish, LA, where her parents lived.

Interestingly, it seems likely that it was her former sister-in-law Elizabeth Johnson (first married to a Mr. Alexander) who was the "Mrs. Elizabeth Alexander" who married John H Fowler in Hempstead 26 Sep 1837. This Elizabeth's parents were Edward Johnson and Deborah Sinclair. Deborah's 1848 Hempstead AR probate records name as one of her heirs "Elizabeth Fowler wife of John H Fowler...of the state of Texas."

This is of course presumptive information and I welcome any corrections or alternative explanations.

Also, back in November I sent you a transcript of the 14 Apr 1832 letter from William Stevenson to William Woods that I mentioned earlier, but I forgot to follow up to see if you had received it. I am interested in your thoughts on these three marriages.

Elizabeth's name is spelled "Elizabeth" in some family Bible records, and"Elisabeth" in others. Her father William refers to her as "Betsey" in a 14 Apr 1832 letter to his friend William Woods in Missouri as follows: "Our oldest daughter Betsey Johnson is lately married to Mr. John Fowler a man about her own age a worthy man and I hope a Christian." (Betsey's first husband was John Johnson of Hempstead County, AR)
