Research Notes
location(s) of interment - it is clear that Dwight died on 16 Jun 1943 while in military service in North Africa. According to a letter written by his cousin, Charles Stevenson, Dwight was buried in North Africa. It is unclear whether his body was exhumed and brought back to Illinois to be re-interred in Salem, Marion County, Illinois where there is a headstone for him. That is, the headstone in the Summit Prairie Cemetery, Salem, Marion County, Illinois may be a cenotaph rather than marking where he was buried. On 21 Jun 1948,[1] Dwight's widow, Ellen Jane Steveson, applied for a Headstone for Military Veterans, and that application was approved and a military veteran headstone was sent to the Summit Prairie Cemetery and laid next to his other headstone. The application does not state whether Dwight's remains were ever shipped from North Africa to Illinois. Hiestand-529 00:00, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
