Family
Joseph Frederick, son of Joseph Stevenson and Anna Laura Quinn, was born on 2 December 1895[1] in Parry Sound, Ontario.[2] Their family lived in Muskoka Township, Muskoka, Ontario; his father was a carpenter.[3]
In 1906, their family was living in Humboldt No. 370, Saskatchewan.[4]
In 1911, Fred was living in household of his uncle, George Watson at 644 Young in Winnipeg, Manitoba.[5]
Fred and his family lived at 682 Warsaw Avenue, Manitoba.[2]
Military Career
Fred served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF), 196th Overseas Battalion during the First World War; he left to join the Imperial Army.[2]
He joined the Royal Flying Corps as a member of 79 Squadron and quickly distinguished himself. He is credited with destroying three observation balloons and 18 enemy aircraft. He eventually finished his military career with the rank of captain along with several decorations including the Distinguished Flying Cross, the French Croix de Guerre and Belgian Croix de Guerre. All of Stevenson's medals are currently on display in the lobby of Winnipeg Airports Authority's administrative offices. [6]
After the war, he was employed as a commercial pilot for Western Canada Airways. His efforts included supporting mining development by flying 23 tons of cargo to a remote exploration site. His efforts helped establish the usefulness of aviation for the development of the remote areas of Canada's North.
Death
Fred (age 32) died in The Pas, Manitoba on 5 Jan 1928.[7]

Winnipeg airport was named Stevenson Field - 1928 - 1958.
