Biography

John Steuart the 3rd of Dalguise, was the eldest son of Alexander Steuart, 2nd of Dalguise) and his wife, Grizel Forbes. From the Red Book of Scotland, he was styled son and apparent heir of his father in a Disposition by Thomas Stewart in Dowallie for the lands of Middle Dalguise in favour of he and Alexander Stewart of Dalguise, his father, dated 9 April 1596. He joined the standard of the Marquis of Montrose during the civil wars and was one of the distinguished leaders of the Atholl Stewarts.^[1]

Marriage

John Steuart, 3rd of Dalguise married Isabel, daughter of William Stewart, 2nd of Kinnaird, (d. in May of 1648). He died in 1653. ^[2]

• 3. Thomas Stewart, described in his mother’s Testament in May of 1648 as the youngest son of his parents. ^[5]
• 4. Margaret Stewart, who m. Alexander Menzies, second son of Robert Menzies, in Aberfeldy, (c/m 26 November 1624). ^[6]
• 5. Grizel Stewart, who m. John Scott, eldest son of Alexander Scott, in Kilmorich, (c/m 26 December 1627).^[7]
• 6. Christian Stewart (styled third daughter of John Stewart of Dalguise in a charter by her husband John MacLaren in Balnaguard) ^[8]
• 7. Isabell Stewart, (m. firstly, Patrick MacSteine, younger of Sock, (c/m 23 and 28 November 1631), by whom she had issue; and secondly, by 23 June 1664, to William Menzies). ^[9]
