Jane Spratt and Joseph Armstrong married by licence at Irvinestown Meeting House, Enniskillen, Fermanagh, Ireland, on 15 June 1861. In the marriage register, Jane was listed as 22 year old spinster, daughter of William Spratt, farmer of Coolback. Joseph was listed as a 30 year old labourer of Woodhill, bachelor, son of John Armstrong, also a labourer. Witnesses to the wedding were Jas. F. Grey and E. Grey. [1]
Joseph (30) and Jane (24) Armstrong and their son William (2) are listed as passengers on the Dauntless, that sailed from Dublin at the end of 1864 and arrived in Auckland on 24 May 1865.[2] Joseph's occupation was recorded as labourer. Eliza Spratt, a 30 year old domestic servant, said to be Jane's aunt, was also on the passenger list. [3] The journey of the Dauntless was troubled and long.
They appear on electoral rolls living in Whangae, a small settlement near Kawakawa, Bay of Islands, Northland, New Zealand. Joseph was listed in successive electoral rolls as settler.
Passed away at 84 years and buried in Holy Trinity Anglican Church Cemetery, Pakaraka, Northland Row 2.
