When you are visiting the Personal Profiles of our Runciman ancestors of the Crail line you will inevitably see references to Scotland & Beyond (SAB) cited in the sources. This Profile gives a short explanation of SAB, a book on the Runciman Lineage 1b - William Runciman of Crail, compiled & published by Jen Jelley & Diane Middleton.

Grateful thanks go to both for their personal research - and for the enormous time and trouble invested by many other 'Crail' descendants around the world (some are mentioned individually in source citations too) - thus ensuring their knowledge is never lost to future generations. SAB is a fascinating record as in addition to family trees it relates personal memories from some Crail Lineage descendants which would be impossible to capture by later researchers. Historically, it draws an interesting line in the sand indicating our understanding of our lineage at a set point of time.

At the time of publication, William of Crail's baptism record had not been discovered and the then estimate of 'circa 1720' is used within SAB's title. Later, it came as some surprise to find William was considerably younger than thought, being born in 1729.

People still ask frequently for a copy but the size of SAB's print run was established from pre-orders so it is has long been out of print. This profile offers a modest halfway house: where possible, any Profile Manager will provide an extract on request if you're interested in a particular ancestor.

First, be aware that to respect the privacy of living people, SAB's full family details & photographs cannot be displayed online. Please remember also that basic 'BMD' data of deceased ancestors is already contained within their WikiTree profile. Indeed in many cases Wiki profiles will contain further research obtained since publication in 2004. So the additional extracted information which could be made available to you is likely a family story told by a contributor. There is only a small number of these so it will be a 'hit or miss' whether one has been told with reference to your ancestor. Chapter 4 is about the family of Charles Runciman & Isabella White. Charles was one of Orphan John's 10 children, 6 of whom were sons. The family remained in the UK (Scotland & England).

Page 40 in SAB.

The family of John Runciman & Isabella Comb is covered in Chapter 5. John's family remained in Scotland with the exception of Matthew who emigrated to Australia. Notice the first born, also named John, continued the sad tradition of drowning at sea.

Jen Jelley was instrumental in collating all her research, & of others, for the publication of the SAB book. Her mother is a 6th generation descendant of William of Crail. Her daughter Diane prepared the input & layout of the research for publication.

Another example is from the late Nora Clancy who married Charles Runciman at Bendigo in 1942 and wrote this piece of nostalgia told by her husband (also deceased). Charles is a 6th generation son of William of Crail.

Ongoing Updates - a plea!

After consideration on the scale and practicalities of an extensive rewrite of SAB the sensible course is to take advantage of digital technology, with WikiTree at the core. This allows several advantages. WikiTree (WT) is free & embraces collaboration among researchers - our ancestors belong to all of us. Using WT Personal Profiles to maintain the latest known research on an ancestor means we all can see a comprehensive encyclopaedia of latest Runciman research. For this to be maximised we request as many descendants as possible to add biographical information/stories to the Profiles of their ancestors. Every one of us is in the unique position of knowing information about close ancestors that no-one else knows - honour their memory by beefing up their Wiki profile from just the basic birth/marriage/death data if that is all that is shown.
