Patrick or Walter Smith was born in 1873 in Stockport, Cheshire. He was the son of Anthony Smith and Mary Lester, [1] and was baptised on 5 October 1873 in St. Joseph's, Stockport, Cheshire, England.[2]

Patrick's parents had married in 1871 and had 5 children before 1879 when his father died. In 1881 Patrick's mother returned to her own large family along with his two young sisters, Mary Ellen 4, and Annie 2, [3] and Patrick 7, and his brothers Thomas 8 and John 6 were living in the Workhouse in Stockport. [4]

In 1901 Patrick 27, was a General Labourer, lodging in the household of Joseph and Emily Bloor in Stretton Street, Manchester, Lancashire.[5]

On 25 May 1901 Patrick (age 27), son of Anthony Smith, married widow Alice Wood at Albert Memorial Church, Collyhurst, Manchester, [6] and in 1911 they were living in Forge Lane in the Bradford area of Manchester. Alice's son Arthur Wood from her previous marriage was in the household, and they also had 2 sons of their own, Norman Smith in 1902 and Eric Smith in 1910. Walter 38, was working as Warehouse Man. [7] They remained at the same address in 1921. [8]

Wife Alice died in 1938, and in 1939 age 65, living in Westmoreland Street, Manchester. He worked as a Packer in a Cotton Warehouse. His wife Alice's sister Ruth Wood was also in the household. [9]

Re change of name from Patrick to Walter. There seems to be no reason for the change, but they are diffinitely the same person.
