Biography

Ellen Smith was born in 1851 in Brundish, Suffolk, England to John Smith and Charlotte (Osborne) Smith. Her birth was registered in Hoxne, Suffolk in the first quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Osborn.^[1] She had a twin sister, Harriet Smith.

In 1851 Ellen Smith (age 2 months) lived in Brundish with her father John (35, Ag Lab), mother Charlotte (36), and six siblings: Caroline (15), Mary Ann (11), Sarah (9), William (5), Honnor (3), and Harriot (2 months).^[2]

Ellen's mother passed away in 1857.

In 1861 Ellen Smith (age 9, Scholar) lived in Brundish with her father John (45, Ag Lab) and five sisters: Sarah (18), Honor (14, Scholar), Harriett (9, Scholar), Hannah (7, Scholar), and Caroline (25, House Keeper), as well as niece Emma (1).^[3]
