Robert Smith was born on 02 August 1866 at the hamlet of Penston in the parish of Gladsmuir in the county of Haddington, Scotland. His parents were registered as John Smith, Coal Miner and Catherine Chambers, who were married in Gladsmuir on 23 February 1866. [1][2]
In the 1871 census Robert (age 4) was in Gladsmuir, Haddingtonshire (East Lothian), Scotland.[6]
At the census of 03 April 1881, Robert Smith was described as aged 14, a Coal Miner, and living at Old Iron Works, Gladsmuir, East Lothian, Scotland. The head of the household was his father, John Smith, aged 40 and a coal miner, who is married to his second wife, Ann aged 43, born Aberlady. Also present are Roberts full siblings; Euphemia, aged 12, a scholar; Francis aged 10, a scholar; James, aged 8, a scholar; and his half siblings; Mary, aged 5, a scholar; and Margaret, aged 3. [7]
Robert Smith married Elizabeth Scott Gibson on 11 October 1889 at 53 Westburn Rows, Newtown, Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, Scotland. The groom was described as Robert Smith, aged 24, Coal Miner, living at 53 Westburn Rows, Newtown, Cambuslang, while the bride was described as Elizabeth Gibson, aged 21, Domestic Servant, living at the same address. The groom's parents were described as John Smith, Coal Miner and Catherine Chambers (deceased). The bride's parents were described as John Gibson, Coal Miner and Mary Thomson (deceased). The marriage was celebrated by Robert John Robson Cowan, Minister of the United Presbyterian Church at Hillside, Cambuslang after Banns according to the Forms of the United Presbyterian Church. The witnesses were Isabella Gibson, possibly the bride's sister, and James Herkes. [8]
Robert Smith and Elizabeth Scott Gibson had seven children:
Mary Smith Gibson was born in 1889 in Gladsmuir, Haddingtonshire. [9]
John Smith, who was born on 27 April 1891 in Gladsmuir, East Lothian, Scotland [10] and died aged 24 on 27 September 1915 in France. [11]
Catherine Chalmers (or Chambers) Smith who was born on 17 April 1893 at Macmerry, Gladsmuir East Lothian, Scotland [12] and died on 9 September 1937 in Macmerry, East Lothian. [13]
Thomas Gibson Smith, who was born in 1895 at Gladsmuir, Haddingtonshire, Scotland [14] and died aged 64 on 11 June 1960. [15][16]
Frank Chambers Smith was born in 1897 in Gladsmuir [17] and died in 1967 in Tranent. [18]
Euphemia Smith was born in 1899 in Gladsmuir. [19]
James Smith, who was born in 1902 at Gladsmuir, Haddingtonshire, Scotland [20] and died in infancy on 02 October 1902.[11][21]
In the 1891 census Robert (age 24), Coal Miner, was the married head of household in Gladsmuir, Haddingtonshire (East Lothian), Scotland.[22]

Robert Smith died on 07 March 1927 at Saint Germains Policies, Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland with his usual address being 8 Saint Germains Terrace, Macmerry, East Lothian, Scotland. He was described as aged 60, a Colliery Labourer, and married to Elizabeth Gibson. His parents were described as John Smith, Coal Miner and Catherine Chalmers (deceased). The cause of death was given as Sudden death, probably heart failure and was not certified. The death was registered on 08 March 1927 at Tranent by his son, Thomas G. Smith of 129 Church Street, Tranent. [24]
The cause of death was later determined to be: Natural causes, probably Heart Failure resulting from disease of the heart as certified by William M. Kennedy, M.B. Ch.B, Tranent. [25]
Robert Smith was buried in the churchyard of Gladsmuir, East Lothian, just a mile from where he was born.[26]
