David Smith worked for a winter in the lumber camps on Drummond and Coburn Islands in upper Lake Huron. When his brother Alexander John died he received word their and walked across the ice from one island to the other on his journey home.
On another occasion as a young man he went out on a hunting party near his home. While getting through a fence his loaded gun discharged, the bullet passing through his chest. Miraculously, he survived the mishap, but guns were never allowed in his home thereafter.
David was a member of the Loyal Orange Lodge where he attained the office of Knight of the Royal Scarlet Chapter.
For seven years David was a member of the Ellice Township Council, three of which he was the Reeve. In 1907 he was the youngest reeve in the Province of Ontario. The Smiths moved to 293 Coburg St Stratford in 1926. The home continues to be in the family in 2014.
