John was born at Olrig, Caithess on 18 September 1843. He was baptised a year later on 8 Oct 1844. He was the son of John Sinclair and Maryon (Mary Ann/Marion) Henderson. According to "the Dictionary of NZ Biography" John emigrated to NZ in 1863 aboard the "Lancashire Witch". However, John Sinclair does not appear on the passenger manifest for that ship's 1863 voyage to NZ. This requires further research. He worked at Cheviot Hills station (farm) as a carpenter. He gained a reputation as a skilled and competent craftsman, designing and building a range of houses, cottages, bridges and other agricultural buildings and structures. He married Margaret Jane Rose, whom he had met in his hometown Olrig, Caithness, before he departed for NZ. She migrated to NZ, arriving in January 1870 and they were married on the 25th of that month. The couple had 3 children together. They retired to Christchurch where John died in 1925. He was buried in St Paul's Anglican Church Cemetery, Papanui, Christchurch City,
