Biography

Christian name is unknown. She was the mother of John Knox, the famous Scottish Religious Reformer. Her immediate family are said to be tenants of the Earl of Bothwell.[1]

Presumably she is a daughter of William St.Clair (or Sinclair) of Northrig, at Morham, Haddingtonshire, who had a feu confirmation, in a charter by Andrew Macdowall, elder son of Dougal Macdowall of Makerstoun, in favour of William St.Clair, of one-third of the lands of Morham including Northrig, &c., dated 22nd February 1484. Sasine of same 7th April 1485.[2] In a charter confirmed 26 February 1490/1, Patrick Hepburn Earl of Bothwell, Lord of Hailes, had a confirmation of the superiority of half of the lands and barony of Yester, Duncanslaw, and Morham, Haddingtonshire, with all tenants and pertinents, which Andrew Makdowell of Makerstoun resigned, which said Patrick now has a charter of all these properties united into the free barony of Morham.[3] All subsequent spellings of William's surname give it as SINCLAIR. The first noted was William Sinclair of Morham who is mentioned in Acta Dominorum Councilii on 24th October 1493 (p.312). His four known children's surnames all appear as Sinclair.

Thank you for your information, I welcome all such comments and additional related information while i learn more of my 9 x g grandfather John Knox. This relationship has only recently come to my attention while researching my Tod, Welsh family lines in connection with The Covenanter history and those of my family Martyred to the cause. My family records and DNA cousins include lots of Scottish surnames as listed in The Scottish Covenanter Genealogical Index by Isabelle McCall Maclean, many of these DNA cousins are also connected to the Knox and Sinclair families. I would agree that confirming the true historical events around this period can be frustrating with a lot of conflicting information, sources and a dearth of records, for the time being i will trust Wikipedia and Ancestry until more reliable sources become available and continue my research. Regards.

Another invention. Despite local claims, there is no accurate or reliable evidence as to where John Knox was born. (It seems likely he was born at home.) Haddington is not in Edinburgh; and the county at the time he was born was called Haddingtonshire. According to Knox's biographer, Lord Eustace Percy, Knox's first marriage was in the summer of 1552. (Berwick-upon-Tweed was not in Scotland in 1552.) Knox married his second wife in 1564, according to "The Complete Peerage" (no month or day given). It is well-recorded that Knox died in Edinburgh, not Linlithgowshire (today West Lothian). Knox's father William was a tenant farmer of the Earl of Bothwell at Morham, not a knight, and his wife was not a 'Lady'.
