William was born about 1834 in Forres, Morayshire, Scotland. The date is an approximation taken from 2 x Census on Ancestry. - see research notes: it is possible that William was born in 1822/1823 to parents David Sinclair and Jean Irving.

He married Mary Anne (Christie) Sinclair on 21 Dec 1867 in Inverbervie, Kincardineshire. ^[1][2]

In the 1891 census William (age 57), Sergeant Militia, was on North Fort Street, Leith, Leith, Leith North, Midlothian.^[7]

William died on the 7 December 1898, and is buried with his wife in Rosehill Cemetary, Montrose, Scotland. ^[8] (see research Notes)

Research Notes

He was a St Sgt. A master gardener,Agricultural labourer and rail worker. He had an army pension at time of death. He is buried at Rosehill cemetary,Montrose. Lair N13,row 5,3 south.

William may have born, 23 Dec 1822 his and his wife Mary's ages both seem to be about 8-10 years older than what the Census information says .

William and Mary's marriage certificate has been seen, they married on 21st Dec 1867 (William aged 39, so suggesting an year of birth as 1827, so already a bit closer to 1823). William's parents are named as David Sinclair (Master Hatter) and Jean Irving. There is a William Sinclair born to a David Sinclair and Jean Irving in Forres in 1822 or 1823 (Family search dates unclear, ancestry record just has baptism on 1st Mar 1823) ^[9]

On William's death record (aged 65 in 1898) his mother is named as a Mary Wishart, however the death was registered by son George, In London, who may not have known or else his father David had remarried. All other details fit with this William:

• Registrant: son George who was resident in London
• Location: Montrose as his usual residence
