Isabella was born on the 30 March 1875 at 7.00 am at 24 Channel Street in the Town of Galashiels, on the Gala Water River, 33 miles (53 km) south of the City of Edinburgh, District of Galashiels, Selkirk, Scotland^[1]. She was the daughter of Robert Shiel and Harriet Smith.

The Census of 1891 finds Robert and Harriet have moved back to the Village of Darnick, in the Parish of Melrose, Roxburghshire, Scotland. They live there with children Isabella, John, Mary Elizabeth Williamson and Violet Agnes (Shiel)^[4].

Walter Inglis (Lumsden) has married Isabella (Shiel) by the Census of 1901 and has them living with their daughter Harriet Smith (Lumsden) and Isabella's sisters, Mary Elizabeth Williamson and Violet Agnes (Shiel) at 10 Larchbank Street, in the Town of Galashiels, on the Gala Water River, 33 miles (53 km) south of the City of Edinburgh, in Selkirkshire, Scotland^[5]. Walter and Isabella have moved by the arrival of the Census of 1911.
