Biography

Temperance Moses was born about 1842 in Lancashire, England. Her estimated year of birth varies on different documents, however the most likely birth registration is in the Liverpool Registration district in the last quarter of 1837. This certificate would need to be checked to confirm that the father named was William (as stated on her marriage certificate).

Temperance Moses was first married to Frederick Alexander Sennett on 7 Apr 1862 at St Crysotom, Everton, West Derby, Lancashire. Both were stated to be "of full age" and not previously married. Frederick's occupation was given as mariner, and his father Henry Thomas Sennett, a lawyer. Temperance's father's name was given as John Moses, and he was also a mariner.

She next married David Runciman on 16 Jul 1892 at All Saints Church, Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester. At the time of her marriage to David Runciman she was described as a widow, aged 47, daughter of William Moses, Sea Captain. Her husband David was a widowed farmer, aged 52, son of Charles Runciman, also a farmer. Note that two different names have been given for Temperance's father. It is possible that he was actually John William or William John Moses, but it may be that Temperance was unsure of her father's name, as an 1841 England Census entry shows Temperance as a 3 year old living with Eliza Sennett aged 75, who may have been her grandmother, implying that it could have been her grandmother that brought her up.

At the time of the 1871 England Census, Alfred (note different name from that on the marriage certificate) and Temperance Sennett were living at Blanchard Street, Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester with their children Fred A, and Rosina Louisa, as well as boarders Nora and Ellen Ryan (both born in Ireland).

By the time of the 1881 England Census, Temperance was widowed, and living at 64 Rigby Street Broughton with her son Frederick A. Her occupation was given as dressmaker. The original census record has her age as 36, but this was obviously questioned and 56 was written beside. The age of 36 fits better with other records.

The 1911 England Census shows Temperance Runciman widowed for a second time, and boarding at 4 Torbock Street Liverpool. Her occupation is "traveller in books".
