S.D. Scott was born in Westbrook, Nova Scotia, the son of John Scott and Margaret Jenks. He lived on a farm until beginning his apprenticeship as a ship's blacksmith. He attended Dalhousie University for a year, but he was forced to return to work periodically as a blacksmith while also working on the college paper. In 1876 Scott completed his M.A. and became editor of the Sackville Post. He edited newspapers in Halifax and St . John for 25 years.
While working in the Maritimes, he researched and published a pamphlet on William Cobbett's time in Canada. [1]

In 1881, he was living in Macan, Cumberland, Nova Scotia, with his mother and older brother Oscar. [3]
On 27 Sep 1885, in River Hebert, N. S., he married Emma Ada Wood (31 Oct 1854 - 10 Apr 1942), the daughter of Jno. W. and Zina Wood. [4]
In 1909 Scott came to Vancouver to work until 1917 on the News-Advertiser.
