Biography

The earliest known of this line is said to have from Scotland and although some details of his life might best be called mythology[1] and not history, there is at least some agreement that he existed albeit with more humble circumstances.

As a immigrant to England, he likly obtained his lands through marriage.[2]

Research Notes

Straker (1819), asserts that John Scoticus (Scot), was steward of Empress Maud's (b. c. 07 Feb 1102 – d. 10 Sep 1167) household and traveled with her from Scotland.[1] But the story is contradicted by another version which says it was Maud, daughter of Malcom of Scotland.[2] Either way ... Treyvelyan (1904), thinks the connection to Maud is "absurd."
He also calls out the wild names tradition attached to the alleged wife and heiress "Laderina", her sisters and their fanciful father ... a la "Alphonsus Gospatricii, Lord of Caverlely".[2] He then goes on to explain that there is no evidence for the old "top part" of the pedigree ... including this John Scot I, his alleged wife Ladernia, daughter of Sir John Lorty; alleged son John II (said to be living c. 1136), etc. ... with the exception of three of the latter's alleged six sons, (see Straker, 1819).[3]

He alledgedly has a son:

  1. John
