Biography

I never thought of myself as a genealogist, but I am finding that in our retirement years new interests tend to develop.

The work that I have done researching my ancestry began in early 2019 when I set myself a task of figuring out how I was related to Albert Payson Terhune (Terhune-574) the American author who wrote novels about Collie dogs. I had read his novels as a child and had been told that he was a distant relative but no one in my family knew the exact relationship. It wasn't an easy task because the relationship goes much further back than I suspected. Albert Payson Terhune and I are 7th cousins, three times removed.

This summer my interest in genealogy was rekindled when a third cousin, who shared my interest in the Terhune family, suggested that I research our relationship to the Fairchild family. That research led me to WikiTree. The Fairchilds have as much interesting history as the Terhunes and WikiTree helped me discover much of that history and how I fit into their story.

My experience with WikiTree has led me to the conclusion that there are a lot more genealogists with an interest in the Fairchilds than in the Terhunes. Most of the Fairchilds have well-documented profiles with active profile managers, whereas I have found that there are not very many genealogists in WikiTree who are interested or active in Terhune profiles. I hope to correct some of the errors and fill in some of the blanks in the Terhune profiles.

Barbara,

I see you just added Agnes (Wilder) Smith as a child of Rhoda Sizemore.

Rhoda Sizemore did appear to have a child who appears in the records as "Aggie Sizemore" and Aggie's father *might* have been Joseph Wilder, based on cited court records that suggest this, but what source supports the claim that this daughter went on to marry Milton B Smith?

Thank you.

I added Agnes (Wilder) Smith as a child of Rhoda Sizemore because there was a Hint 592 (FindAGrave - Possible mother) on the profile. I did not make any other changes. The history of the profile changes show that her profile was created 4 Jun 2022 by Doug Tabor (Tabor-2065). He added her as a spouse of Milton Smith based on a Census record from Family Search.
Thanks for the explanation; I'll add that info to the profile.

It's quite possible, even probable. I just wish we had something stronger than Find-a-Grave to prove it. ;-). Generally, I do not add relationships based solely on Find-a-Grave, although I might make note of it in the relevant biographies.

Hello Barbara! I am a relative, Terhune. Garrett Terhune, United Empire Loyalist, grandfather of my great grandmother.

Hi Anna.

It's great to hear from a Terhune relative. There are several profiles on WikiTree for the name Garrett Terhune. Is your relative the Garrett Terhune (1823-1901)? He is my great great grandfather. Does your great grandmother have a profile yet on WikiTree? Do you know if your great great grandparent was one of the children that Garrett had with his first wife, Olive, or his second wife, Angeline?

Any information on missing profiles in the Terhune line would be very helpful for making WikiTree more complete and useful.

Hope to hear from you again,

Barbara

Hi Barbara,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Hi Barbara!

Thank you for adding your DNA Test information to your profile on WikiTree. Your information will be propagated to the profiles of your parents and your ancestors within about 24 hours of being added. It will also propagate to the profiles of the descendants of your ancestors, so they may see your information under the heading "DNA Connections" just as you can see theirs.

Getting started with DNA outlines how to proceed to use your DNA test information on WikiTree and DNA is a link to a collection of links about WikiTree's many features involving DNA.

The DNA Connections list on your profile will provide a visual way for you to find potential relatives on WikiTree who have also added their DNA test information. Using DNA tools at sites like GEDMatch.com, if you find a relative that matches your DNA sufficiently and you have genealogical sources for the intermediate relationships, you can mark the specific parental relationships back to the most recent ancestor that you both share as "confirmed with DNA." For details, guidance, and examples of how to properly document DNA confirmations, see DNA confirmation.

To get the best results, begin adding sourced profiles for your ancestors until you can connect to ancestors already in WikiTree. If you have exhausted what you know on one line, it can sometimes help to add what you know on another line. The more branches you are able to add the greater the likelihood of finding potential cousins to match with. The process of identifying which branch elements of DNA relate to will better enable you to find matches that relate to the particular branches you are researching.

Let me know if you have any questions and have fun!
