Edmund Scarburgh (aka Scarborough) was baptized on 25 December 1584 in North Walsham, county Norfolk, England.[1] He was the son of Henry Scarburgh.[2]
NOTE: Edmund Scarburgh was NOT the son of Henry Scarburgh and Elizabeth Humberstone.[3] That Henry was Edmund's elder brother. His father was the elder Henry Scarburgh, the Elder (died ca. 1605), who said in his will "my son Edmund to be kept at the Inns of Court till he hath taken the degree of a barrister."[2]
Henry Scarburgh the elder was not married to an "Elizabeth Sham;" there was no such person. His wife's name was Elizabeth, yes, but the "Sham" comes from a mistaken reading of a hypenated "Walsham".[4] His wife's maiden name was Elizabeth Bell. See Henry Scarburgh's profile.
Education: Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University.
Scarburghe (Scarburge), Edmund of North Walsham, Norfolk, (bapt., Dec. 25, 1584), son of Henry Scarburghe ... not mentioned in his father's will dated 1614.[5]
Admitted 15 April, 1602 (NB: "Biographical History of Gonville and Caius College" wrongly names him as son of Henry Scarburgh who died in 1617 and says "probably died young"; as can be seen from the wills of Henry Scarburgh the elder, d. 1606, and Henry the younger d. 1617, Edmund was son of the former and brother of the latter.)

Immigration
Emigration to the Colony of Virginia: Between 1625-1628.
Greer's "Early American Immigrants" states that Hannah Scarborough did not come to Virginia until January 1635. If so, she remained in England helping to raise their children, while waiting to make sure of Edmond, Sr. and Edmond, Jr.'s successful settlement in the New World. If she truly arrived in January 1635, it must have been shortly after her husband's passing as his Will was proven on 9 Jan. 1635. An alternate explanation is that Hannah Scarborough accompanied her husband Edmond Sr. and son Edmond Jr. to Virginia in the 1620s but returned to England shortly thereafter until 1635 when she emigrated permanently to the colony.
According to Robert B. Scarborough's book, "SCARBOROUGHS...," Edmond Sr. was born in North Walsham, Norfolk, England, where he was baptized on December 25, 1584. He, his brother Samuel Scarburgh and his son Edmond Scarborough, Jr., were the first of the Scarborough family to arrive in Virginia, between 1625-1628. The family settled in Accomack County, Eastern Shore, Virginia. Captain Edmond Scarborough Sr. soon made a name for himself in Virginia. He was prominent in "Ye Kingdome of Accawmacke," there in the early 17th Century. Edmond Scarborough Sr. was the Member of the Virginia House of Burgesses for Accomac in 1629, 1631 and 1632. He served as the first Justice of Accomac County in 1631 and as a member of the Board of Justices in 1632.[6]
The name of Edmund Scarburgh's wife has traditionally been given as "Hannah Butler". The identification of her as a Butler seems to come from Edmund Scarburgh, the younger, claiming fifty acres of land for the transportation of one "Robert Butler, servant"; this identification is in error.
Edmund Scarburgh was married to Hannah (Smith) Mercer, daughter of Edmund Smith (rector of Tenby in Pembrokeshire, Wales) and widow of Ralph Mercer (d. 1613, buried at Tenby). The will of Hannah Smith's father Edmund, dated 10 January 1616/17, names "my daughter Anna Scarbrough" (NB that "Anna" is the Greek/Latin form of "Hannah") and "grandson Charles Scarbrough" (Charles was the only one of Edmund and Hannah's children to have been born at this point); the will of Lording Barry (uncle of Hannah Smith), written in 1625, makes a bequest of £3 to "Charles Scarburgh, son of Edmund Scarburgh of Saint Martin in the Fields" and names as executor "Hannah, wife of Edmund Scarburgh of Saint Martin in the Fields", with residuary legacy to "Edmond Scarburgh, son of the said Edmond and Hannah".[8]
Death and Legacy
Edmund died intestate sometime after his last appearance in court in April 1634 and before his widow, Hannah Scarburgh, sold cattle to Capt Graves on "1-9-1634/5.[9]
Edmund's estate was probated on 9 January 1635 at Magothy Bay, Accomack County, Colony of Virginia.[10] He was buried in the Scarborough Graveyard, Accomack County, Virginia. [11]

Research Notes
Origin: Edmund Scarburgh was NOT the son of Henry Scarburgh and Elizabeth Humberstone, as reported by Jewel Scarborough in Southern Kith and Kin ....[10] That Henry was Edmund's elder brother. His father was the elder Henry Scarburgh (died c. 1605) who said in his will "my son Edmund to be kept at the Inns of Court till he hath taken the degree of a barrister".
Marriage: Norman H. Rickler reports that Hannah married again after Edmund died:
Edmund's widow married in 1656, as her 2nd, to Capt. William Custis. John Custis was the father-in-law of Col. "King" Edmund Scarborough referred to as such for the grip he seemed to hold over the county's inhabitants.[9]
Edmund Scarborough (Scarburgh) is a qualifying ancestor to the Jamestowne Society.[12]

Scarborough-2472 and Scarborough-3 appear to represent the same person because: Clearly these are suppoosed to be the sasme person (Edmund Scarburgh, b. 1584 and died 1634 in Virginia,, has been given the fictitious middle name of "Norton" by some people for some unknown reason)
Again, Edmund Scarburgh was not married to Hannah Butler. He was married to Hannah Smith. Hannah Smith's father names her as "my daughter Anna Scarbrough" in his will. He also names "grandson Charles Scarbrough". The name "Butler" is an error arising from mistaken identification on the basis that Edmund the younger claimed a Robert Butler as headright.
Hannah was named in her uncle's will on 18 July 1625 at St. Martines in the Fields, England. In his will Lordinge Barry -- brother of Alice (Barry) Smith, mother of Hannah (Smith) Scarburgh -- gave Charles, son of Edmond Scarburgh of Saint Martines in the Fields 3/. to buy him a gold ring. Exts & residuary legatees were Hannah, wife to Edmond Scarburgh of St Martins in the Fields and Edmond, son to said Edmond and Hannah.
Because the maiden name of Edmund's wife is unknown, should we create a profile for Hannah (Unknown)? We could write a section on her proposed maiden names and merge both the Smith and Butler profiles into it.
Thanks!

Scarborough-239 and Scarborough-3 do not represent the same person because: This merge should be rejected because there is no evidence that Edmund's wife was Hannah Smith, there is, however, more than one reference to his wife as Hannah Butler, i.e. Southern Kith and Kin, by Jewel Davis Scarborough, and Descendants of Edmund Scarborough," by Cynthia McDaniel, Ghote, which quotes directly from Kith and Kin.
The wife of Edmund Scarburgh was not Hannah Butler. Her identification as Butler seems to come from the fact that a Robert Butler, identified as a servant, was transported to Virginia by Edmund Scarburgh, who claimed him as a headright.
Edmund Scarburgh was not the son of Henry Scarburgh and Mary Humberstone. Henry who m. Mary Humberstone was Edmund Scarburgh's brother. (See the will of Edmund Scarburgh who m. Elizabeth, d. 1604, in which he says "my son Edmund to be kept at the Inns of Court till he hath taken the degree of a barrister."
