Biography

Jane Saunders was probably born in the early 1780s to Benjamin Saunders and his wife in Harbour Island, Bahamas. We know who Benjamin's surviving children were - from his detailed February 1796 will - but not when they were born.

Benjamin wrote "..I give and bequeath unto my daughter Jane Saunders her mother’s silver shoe buckles and sixteen dollars being part of the money Charles was sold for.."

Jane married John Whitehead, the son, perhaps, of John and Ann Whitehead, about 1800. Their daughter, Anne Sarah Whitehead, was born, 16 November 1801, in Harbour Island. Robert Henry Whitehead was born in 1804, and John Alexander Whitehead was born in 1810 in Nassau.

John Whitehead died before 20 April 1816 - the date that Jane Whitehead wrote her will and described herself of "the Island of New Providence, widow."

Benjamin and Charlotte became the guardians, in May 1816, of Charlotte's nieces and nephews, the children of John and Jane Whitehead. Jane's will gave specific instructions: " .. Item. It is my wish that my loving sister, Charlotte Thompson, wife of Benjamin Thompson of the Island of New Providence aforesaid Gentleman, and the said Benjamin, be Guardians for and on behalf of my said children Robert Henry, John Alexander, and Anne Sarah .."

Jane Saunders Whitehead's will was proved, 8 May 1816, in Nassau, Bahamas.
