Biography

Charles Sampson was born in Dorset, England. His father was Mark Sampson.

Charles Sampson married Mary Gollop in Dorset in 1840, they lived in Stoke Abbot (Beaminster parish) Dorset before emigrating.

Charles and Mary Sampson were New Zealand Company emigrants who arrived in New Plymouth, Taranaki with their baby Marina on February 24th 1842, on the ship Timandra. They left Plymouth, England on November 2nd 1841, the barque Timandra one of the six New Zealand Company ships bringing settlers to Taranaki, New Zealand. [1]

Charles and Mary settled on Langdon Farm at Te Hua (Fitzroy) near Bell Block, just outside New Plymouth. They later moved to Leach Street, New Plymouth.

Charles Sampson joined the Militia when war broke out in the 1850s. He became involved in local government and and was a director of the New Plymouth Co-operative Society.

DEATHS.
SAMPSON - May 26th 1895, at his residence, Leach Street, New Plymouth; Charles Sampson, in the 77th year of his age. Deceased came to the Colony in 1842.

Charles Sampson was buried on the 28th May 1895 aged 77 years in Te Henui Cemetery, New Plymouth.

OBITUARY.
DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER
Mr Charles Sampson, who died on Sunday, was a native of Dorset, England, and came out to the colony in the Timandra, in February, 1842, and settled on land at Henui, now known as Fitzroy.
Some years after Mr Sampson took up land at Bell Block, where he resided till the Maori rebellion broke out. He, like all the other settlers, had to vacate their land, come into town, and take a part in suppressing the rebellion, he being a member of the Taranaki Militia.
On the declaration of peace Mr Sampson went to reside at Hua, where he carried on the pursuit of farming till, some eight years ago, when be left the farm and came into town to reside.
Mr. Sampson has resided in town ever since, and was able to be about till some four weeks ago, when he was confined to his residence through illness, and passed quietly away on Sunday afternoon at the ripe age of 77 years.
Mr Sampson always took an active part in local government in his district, and was also, up to the time of his death, a director of the New Plymouth Co-operative Society, and an original member of the Friendly Society.
He leaves a widow and large family, who all reside in the colony. The members of the family are Mrs A.J. Hoskins (Bell Block) Mrs T. Clare (Waihi) Mrs Smaller (Stratford) Mrs J. Rattenbury (Tongaporutu) Mrs H. Rattenbury (Bell Block) Mrs Gilbert (Wanganui) Mrs G. Looney (Oakura). The sons are Messrs G. Sampson (Waitara) J. Sampson (Hua) and F. Sampson (Sentry Hill).

Charles was born in 1818. He passed away in 1895.
