The marriage took place at St. Mary's, in Chesham, Bucks. The Bishop's transcript notes that the bride was "the widow Ellen Saale," and that the groom was the "late Servant to Edward Sale," suggesting that William Tiler (Tyler) married his late boss's widow. And indeed, an earlier transcript entry reports the marriage 20 October 1589 at St. Mary's of Edward, son of the widow Saale, and Elizab., daughter of John Gifforde. I realize that if the widow Ellen Sale of the 1599 marriage record and "Elizab." (Gifford) Sale are the same person, then the Ellen Sale who was chr. in 1568, the daughter of John and Agnes Sale, would not have been the wife of William Tyler.
Interesting thought. But Edward died in 1620, so his wife would not be "widow" at the time of the 1599 marriage of Ellen Sale with William Tyler. An alternative hypothesis is that Ellen Sale had a prior short marriage - she was 31 years old at the time of the 1599 marriage.
Good point; I agree that Ellen was not the widow of the Edward who survived to 1620. But she was the widow of SOMEBODY, so I still suspect that Sale is a married name for her, and not a maiden name. For example, it seems as though Edward had a couple of brothers whose situation is unknown subsequent to their christenings; no burial record, and if they married, likely it would have been in some other parish. If one of them married Ellen _____ and then passed away, it wouldn't be the first time that a widow found solace in the arms of an employee of her quondam brother in law.
