James Ruthven was born in 1871 in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, probably in the village of Cambusnethan, though he sometimes says Wishaw.
Schoolboy 1881 Cottingham
James Ruthven 43 was born, married and had at least three children in Scotland, then about 1870 he moved to Sunderland but soon came further south to Cottingham and Hull. He is a Cord Merchant, not a corn merchant, as is made clear by the expansion " Rope & Sail dxxx ".
His son James age 9 was born in Scotland but is a schoolboy in Cottingham where he has spent most of the childhood, [1]
Marriage 1896 Hull
James Ruthven married Florence Olga Tulley in Hull (Sculcoates) in 1896, [2][3]
Ropery 1911 Hull
Oddly James Ruthven 13 is the son of James Ruthven junr. age 40. England has never followed the American pattern and in this case the father has been competing with his own father in the Hull area as a Rope Merchant.
By 1911 James Ruthven 40 has turned a small cord twining works into a Rope and Ship-Rigging Business capable of rigging a sailing vessel with appropriate ropes throughout..
The younger James is certainly still at school at Hymers College under half a mile from home. He will have joined the cadet force but nobody foresees a Great War in Europe in 1914. [4]
