Sydney married Louisa (Lawson) Richardson, a widow with six children, in 1916.[1]
Sydney served in the Australian Imperial Force during the First World War (service number 6568).[3] He was killed in action at the approximate age of 38 while serving in the 16th Battalion Australian Infantry and is memorialized at the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, West Flanders, Belgium.[4] The final resting place of his remains is unknown.[5]
Sydney's attestation papers state he was born in Natal, South Africa, but his family had arrived in South Australia before 1877. His birth is not registered in South Australia, perhaps he was born just before the family emigrated.
