Charles A. Runciman was born in Sylvan Township, Washtenaw County, on August 14, 1881 and died at his farm home near Gregory after a long illness Friday, February 19, 1943.
He was the only son of the late George and Emma Runciman. On September 3, 1921 he was united in marriage to Grace Gardner in Pickney. Besides his wife, Grace and a son, Glen and family, he leaves a sister, Mrs. Edward Cooper of Waterloo, and a step-mother, Mrs. Agnes Runciman of Lansing, who will mourn for the love and council in the home of one who was ever ready to give his heart's deepest sympathy.
With the exception of a few years spent on a farm in Lyndon Township, all of his life was spent in the immediate vicinity of the farm where he died. He was a man of wide knowledge and understanding, a man of Industry, possessed of strong convictions and devoted to the emotional principal of truth and honesty. If it be true that "An honest man is the noblest work of God" we can justify announcing him a noble man.
For a number of years he has been one of the leading Democrats in Livingston County, always taking an active part. He was a member of Livingston County Board of Supervisors for eight years. In 1936 he ran on the Democratic Ticket for State Representative. In October 1936 he was appointed by the Governor as a Tax Examiner for the State Tax Commission. In this capacity, he served two years.
His life of unselfish devotion to his family and neighbors will ever be an inspiration to those who remain behind. At an early age he joined the Stockbridge Lodge of P. & A. M. Dr. Frederick Hehner officiating. The pall bearers were his neighbors, Burr Jackson, Robert Reid, June Taylor, Grover Singleton, Alex Reid and Fred Asquith. Burial in Stockbridge Cemetery.
