Birth and Baptism

Christian Runciman was baptized on 10 May 1761 in Dunbar Parish^[1]

Research Notes

It is conjectured that their gender was female as Christian, Christiana and Christina were common women's names in Scotland^[2].

The year of Christian's baptism is given as 1761. The heading of the page in the Register has 1760, however this is conjectured to be an error. The transcribers at the National Records Scotland seem to have attributed all the baptisms on that page to 1761 (not 1760) (based on a sample of 4 individual I investigated). That is consistent with what is know of the weekday on which baptism were conducted in this Parish: which was on the Sabbath before the congregation. The dates on the Register page are consistent with Sundays in 1761 (ie 10th, 17th, 24th May 1861), not 1760. In Christian's case a birth on 10 May 1760 would predate her parents marriage on 23 May: there is no evidence that she was conceived and born out of wedlock.
