Biography

George Rumgay was born on 7 May 1746 and baptised on 11 May 1746 in Crail, Fife, Scotland, the son of William Rumgay and Elspeth Ramsay.^[1]

George married Helen Toddie on or after 14 December 1770 in Kilrenny, Fife.^[2] They had three known children:

1. Margaret, born or baptised on 23 February 1772 in Kilrenny,^[3]
2. Jean, born or baptised on 12 December 1773 in Kilrenny,^[4] and
3. Helen, born or baptised on 29 October 1775 in Kilrenny.^[5]

Helen presumably died between 1775 and 1782 as George married Margaret Brown on or after 15 November 1782 in Kilrenny.^[6] They had two known children:

1. Elspith, born or baptised on 9 January 1785 in Kilrenny,^[7] and
2. William, born or baptised on 9 November 1788 in Kilrenny.^[8]

George probably died or was buried on 21 November 1800 in Kilrenny, Fife.^[9]

Research Notes

George's second marriage and further children: given that the only other George Rumgay around this time was George's older brother, who presumably predeceased him, it seems likely that the marriage to Margaret Brown was George's second marriage after Helen Toddie's death. There are no children baptised to a George Rumgay around this time other than the five listed above. The fact that all the events took place in Kilrenny also indicates that they were likely to be the same family.

Daughter Margaret died or was buried on 16 December 1793 in Kilrenny, Fife, Scotland.^[10]

Daughter Elspeth (age 63) died or was buried on 5 May 1848 in Kilrenny, Fife, Scotland.^[11]
