Biography

CARCOAR POLICE COURT. (1882, August 5). The Carcoar Chronicle (NSW : 1878 - 1943), , p. 2.from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article112524116 Barrington Rothery v. John Livingstone. Mr Dodd for plaintiff. Action for L10(sic) damages. From the evidence it appeared that the plaintiff lately married and hearing that the defendant intended to take part in the ceremony of tin-kettling, he went to defendant and cautioned him against coming near the house. Notwithstanding the caution the defendant went to plaintiffs house and acted in an offensive manner. The plaintiff was very much annoyed and his wife was very much frightened. The Bench thought a stop should be put to such proceedings as tin-kettling whereby respectable people were annoyed and insulted. They therefore gave a verdict in favour of plaintiff for L10(sic) and costs.

(Note- Tin-Kettling=A tin kettling is a noisy celebration of a recent marriage accompanied by the banging of pots, pans, and other improvised musical instruments, usually conducted at the home of the couple after the wedding ceremony. .........the early evidence of tin kettling is associated with disturbances of the peace and with unwelcome intrusions into the privacy of the newly-wedded couple.........) http://andc.anu.edu.au/sites/default/files/Ozwords%20October.pdf
